RGS-IBG Annual International Conference, London, August 27-29, 2014
What if the postmetropolis is…? Re-envisaging city dynamics
Session organisers: James Esson (Loughborough), Katherine Gough (Loughborough) and Alan Latham (University College London)
Sponsored by the RGS-IBG Urban Geography Research Group
Drawing on Edward Soja’s work on Los Angeles, Garth Myers provocatively asked ‘What if the Postmetroplis is Lusaka?’ By posing and attempting to answer this question, Myers not only highlights the wide range of existing urban societies, but also encourages geographers to question the dominant often Western-centric lens used to inform contemporary understandings of what constitutes a city. This session will contribute to this intellectual endeavour by encouraging geographers researching cities across the globe to reflect on the challenges and new opportunities that arise when starting from different empirical and theoretical entry points. Through considering how different communities might deploy each other’s perspectives, we aim to create new understandings of city dynamics in the twenty first century. We welcome papers from across the globe that critically examine cities and address the question ‘What if the postmetropolis is…?’
Possible topics include but are not limited to:
* Attachment and belonging
* Sociality and urban life
* Employment and livelihoods
* Globalization and the cultural economy
* Mobility and immobility
* Segregation and the spatial composition of cities
* Governmentality and governance
* Economic restructuring
* Drivers of urban change
Please send proposed titles and abstracts of not more than 250 words to the session organisers by Friday 14th February 2014.
