I have recently written the annual report on the work of the Sport study group (SSG) for the BSA Council. I thought I would share some of this with you as well as other news.
Following the creation of the JISC mailing list the group has continued to attract a steady flow of new recruits - the membership number is now over 110.
Key Activities during year 2013:
Members of the group organised and funded a stream plenary at the annual conference in London in April 2013 and held a forum for postgraduate students in September 2013. The group also supported, via publicity, an event hosted by the University of Brighton in September 2013. A planned event on ‘Sport and Protest’ had to be postponed owing to work commitments of the organiser, but this is now likely to be staged in 2015.
Upcoming events:
There are several sessions on sport at the BSA Annual Conference in Leeds from 23-25 April. In addition study group members are talking in other streams, including race and ethnicity.
The SSG business meeting will take place during the lunch break (12:30 - 13:30) at the annual conference on Thursday 24 April.
Cardiff University will host the 2014 PG Forum in September (Friday 5th), organised as ever by local postgraduate and early career researchers. Tim Banks will be sending out further information next month.
Other study groups have expressed an interest in working together with the group in the future (e.g. Scottish Studies; Medical Sociology) and we look forward to holding discussions about appropriate topics for events.
If you are interested in hosting an event please contact me, Mark Doidge and / or Louise Mansfield.
Finally, I was asked to collect information about books (monographs or edited collections) that SSG members had produced between September 2013 and April 2014 for an item in Network (the BSA newsletter). The deadline for this has passed but please find attached the details that hopefully will be forthcoming in the April issue.
Best wishes for a productive, successful and sociological 2014
John
