Hi,
I have experiences with SPM on both CentOS and Debian systems on which Matlab and SPM were running without any problems.
Finally, we considered CentOS to be the first choice because it consumes a very low rate of time to maintain and to take care of. Debian/Ubuntu instead need regular updates/distro upgrades once or twice a year.
On the other hand, the kernel and system libraries in CentOS are much older which needs to be kept in mind (which only makes trouble in case some software was compiled with newer shared library versions).
As far as I now all major neuroimaging tools (SPM, FSL, FreeSurfer, ...) are running on both linux systems.
For multi-user graphical user interface remote connection we are currently using freenx server with NoMachine NX clients (mainly for our Windows desktop PCs), but this software is out of maintenance and support since 2008... X2go should be a good and free alternative.
Regards,
Martin
