I am in the process of looking through a series of early 19th century
colliery accounts. From these it would appear that the main lighting
within the mine was with whale oil in lamps. anything upto 50 pounds
worth of whale oil is purchased by the colliery for lamps along with
regular purchases of lamps and lamp wicks compared to approximately 6
doz candles each year which are stipulated for use in offices and
stables.
How common was it to use oil lamps in mines instead of candles?
