Nomads: The Cinema of Marilú Mallet, Valeria Sarmiento and Angelina Vázquez

Edited by Catalina Donoso (Universidad de Chile) and Elizabeth Ramírez (University of Warwick)

The cinema of Chilean directors Marilú Mallet, Valeria Sarmiento and Angelina Vázquez continue to be an uncharted and unexplored territory in both public and academic circles. Young directors during Allende’s Popular Unity, exiled to Canada, France and Finland following the military coup of 1973, these filmmakers have been largely marginalised from Chilean academic debates, despite their recognition outside the country. Directors of relevant films such as Unfinished Diary (Mallet, 1982), A Man, When he is a Man (Sarmiento, 1982) and Fragments from an Unfinished Diary (Vázquez, 1983), these directors have throughout their careers, blurred the lines between fiction and documentary, questioned the notion of the ‘political’ in Latin American cinema, challenged the borders of ‘national cinema’, and brought to foreground the role of women both behind and in front of the camera. Despite the relevance of these filmmakers’ oeuvre, to date, no book dedicated to exploring their work exists. This collection of essays seeks to remedy this omission. The initiative emerged from the retrospective Nomads: The Cinema of Marilú Mallet, Valeria Sarmiento, and Angelina Vázquez that took place during the 20th International Film Festival of Valdivia 2013, organized by a group of Chilean and international scholars: Catalina Donoso (Universidad de Chile), Luis Horta (Cineteca Universidad de Chile), José Miguel Palacios (New York University), Elizabeth Ramírez (University of Warwick), Laura Senio Blair (Southwestern University), and Constanza Vergara (Universidad Alberto Hurtado).

We are seeking proposals of 500 words, plus a brief biography of the author of 50 words for essays to be included in the book.

Completed essays should be between 5000 and 7000 words, including notes and the bibliography. References should follow the MLA format. Proposals for articles as well as finished essays will be accepted in either Spanish or English.

We are open to proposals that examine diverse aspects of these three directors, including their productions in Chile and/or abroad, documentary or fiction, for both film and television. Essays can focus on the individual works of these directors, or themes interwoven throughout their works.

Essays over the following topics are of particular interest (but by no means are limited to those listed below):

Individual or comparative analysis of the works of Mallet, Sarmiento and/or Vázquez

Intersections between documentary and fiction

The role of women in political cinema in Latin America

Feminist readings of the cinema of Mallet, Sarmiento, and/or Vázquez

Exile and uprootedness

Comparisons between the work of Mallet, Sarmiento and Vázquez, and other women directors

Distribution and circulation of their works

Modes of production of their works abroad and/or in Chile

Reception of their works abroad: solidarity with Chile under the dictatorship

Proposals should be sent to [log in to unmask] by March 30, 2014. Proposals will be revised by the editors of the book and notice of acceptance will be sent by April 18, 2014. Essays will need to be completed by August 31, 2014. Please send any queries to [log in to unmask]

The publication will be bilingual (Spanish and English). This book is made possible by the generous support of Santander Universities-University of Warwick and Iniciativa Bicentenario de la Universidad de Chile.

Cualquier consulta por favor hacerlas al correo [log in to unmask]
