Dear Colleagues,
Given the number of messages to the MeCCSA JISCMail list today about de Botton's appearance on Newsnight and subsequent questions arising about the purpose of the list, I would like to make some clarifications as outlined below.
Firstly, our lists are described on the MeCCSA website as "discussion lists" and we do not deter people from using it to engage in proper debate about issues that may be relevant to members. It is not intended solely for announcements. Full details on our lists are on the MeCCSA website: http://www.meccsa.org.uk/resources/discussion-list/
Secondly, any members concerned about the number of daily messages received can edit their subscription to receive a daily or weekly digest (single email with all messages / headers, instead of each post seperately). You can do so directly on the JISCMail website: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/meccsa.html
Thirdly, if anyone would like to write a blog post about de Botton's report I would be happy to consider publishing this on the MeCCSA website, allowing people to contribute to the discussion in the comments below it on our website. Please get in touch with me if you would like to write a blog post or alternatively contribute about this topic in the forthcoming issue of Three-D.
Finally, can I please remind everyone that posts to the MeCCSA mailing list are public, are indexed by Google, and can be accessed form the JISCMail website (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/meccsa.html).
Moreover, any messages posted to the list are subject to the JISCMail acceptable use policy, which states:
“Sending messages to JISCMail lists is generally a matter of common sense and courtesy. As a JISCMail user you should be able to use your own sense of what is appropriate to guide your conduct, without engaging in unreasonable behaviour, or disrupting the general flow of discussion on a list.”
Full details of the JISCMail acceptable use policy is available online:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/policyandsecurity/acceptableuse.html
Use of JISCMail is also subject to the JANET Acceptable Use Policy, available online from:

All the best,
Einar
