Hi Donna,
We already have nearly 20 million openly licensed files available on the
web in Wikimedia Commons <https://commons.wikimedia.org>. Most, but not all
is quite new, but it is pretty good for views and historic buildings. If
you look at the categorisation you'll find that we have images of pretty
much every UK settlement. I hope you find some content there that meets
your needs.
Needless to say if some of the people you work with have suitable stuff to
share we would be happy to host more files. I expect that much of the stuff
you would be dealing with would be more suitable to genealogy sites, but
not all of it will be, and for the future, our wish list includes video of
various waterfalls, locks, breakwaters and so forth and I imagine that
would be of interest to you. Closer to the topic of this list, we have lots
of images of old machinery and events though relatively few videos of
tools<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Can_opener.ogg>and
machinery in action. I assume that lots of museums would like to offer
their visitors, virtual or otherwise, an opportunity to see machinery
exhibits in action, but it isn't very practical to do this live all the
time with the actual exhibits (things wear out, require inordinate amounts
of coal, ammunition or space). We'd be delighted to host such videos and
make them freely available for all to use.
Regards
Jonathan Cardy
