Hello Regina,
I manage two small site libraries (art and music) and our short loans are interfiled. There's a yellow dot on the spine and the date label is yellow (long and week loan date labels are white). Our short loan date stamp includes the time that the item is due back (11am) as well as the date. This is the same labelling as at our other sites.
We don't have self-issue machines in the art and music libraries, which may help because it means that every time someone borrows a short loan book, we can say to the borrower, in person, that the item is a short loan and due back the following day.
We only have problems with this at the beginning of the year with new students as they get used to the system. It's something I always include in library induction tours - I ask all the students to grab a book off the shelf and I'll spot someone with a short loan and get them to describe the labelling and what they think it means. Then I explain the different loan periods and fines to them.
It may well be the case that in a few weeks your students will have become used to it. Could you get some bookmarks printed up and include them in each book explaining your new system?
I don't know if that helps at all....
Best wishes,
Helen.

Subject: Short loan books
Hello,
We've recently interfiled our short loan books with the main sequence and have found that some of our students are confusing the short-loan (24 hour loan) books with normal/one week loans.
We have a label on the spine of the book to indicate that it is a 24 hour loan and a 'No Renewal is possible' stamp on the first page of the book. However, some students are trying to renew these books online and are incurring a fine as they are not renewable.
If you have interfiled a short-loan collection, can you offer any advice? Did you encounter any problems for students and if you did, how did you overcome them?
Thanks in advance for your help
Kind regards
Regina
