Hi Heather,
In my previous post I ran workshops called 'Referencing without tears' where we looked at EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley in the light of their benefits and disadvantages for various kinds of workflow and individual preferences. I've generally steered away from doing workshops or training on any one tool, because I think it's important to see a selection of what's available and consider what will work best for you and your workflow. However, I did once give a 'guided tour' of Mendeley at the request of the Law Faculty, but I'm afraid I did this in a very informal way - rather than conscientiously demo'ing all the functionality, I just showed my own library and groups, my preferred ways of saving material and my folders and tags. Because it's such an intuitive programme and has screencasts, forums etc., I didn't feel I need to go into full-on training mode : )
I usually find it useful to stress how Mendeley was designed as a way of managing full-text papers, so the easiest way to use it is to save a paper and the citation gets autogenerated from that. This is in contrast with programmes like EndNote and Zotero which were originally designed to manage references (although of course you can attach full-text PDFs to the reference if they exist digitally). That's one of the aspects that can lead to some useful reflective discussion around the kind of material students are needing to manage and save, and often leads on to some interesting comparisons between the disciplines.
The materials for Refs without Tears are all CC-licensed and can be downloaded from http://researchcentral.wordpress.com/. Or the other way to do it would be to see if any of your students is already a Mendeley Advisor, and get him/her to give the session!
Best wishes,
Emma.
