italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear colleagues,
Please find below details of the next research event organized by
Italian at the University of Leeds:
'Self-reflection in Italian Literature'
17 January 2014 | 9:30-17:30| Workshop
Seminar Room 1, Leeds Humanities Research Institute
Organised by Olivia Santovetti, Alessio Baldini and Cristina Rios
(Italian) co-funded by Italian at SMLC and the Literary Studies Research
Group.
This workshop is conceived as the first stage of interaction among
scholars of different academic institutions worldwide interested in the
theme of self-reflection in Italian literature. The institutions
include: University of Leeds, University of Pisa, University of Siena,
University of Naples II, Freie University Berlin, Universiteit Gent,
Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul. The first outcome of this
research network will be the publication of a themed issue of The
Italianist, on Self reflection (expected publication in 2015). The aim
of the workshop is to explore and examine the range, function and nature
of self-reflexive devices and techniques in Italian narrative fiction
from the Middle Ages to the contemporary. Self-reflection has been
defined as an umbrella term encompassing both metanarration and
metafiction, that is texts which reflect and comment on their own
composition, reception and on their existence as a work of literature.
A further meaning of the term will be explored: self-reflection in the
literal sense of reflection of the self in texts that ambiguously mix
fiction and autobiography, a phenomenon recently given the label
'auto-fiction'.
The morning sessions (10:00-12:30) will focus on the contemporary and
twentieth-century periods, whereas the after-lunch session (13:30-15:00)
will tackle the nineteenth century and the pre-modern periods
(Renaissance and Medieval). Each contribution is intended to provide an
interpretive commentary on a text or passage that exemplifies the
authorial self-reflective attitude. The final round-table (15:30-17:30)
will identify and strengthen the principles guiding the project. Special
attention will be given to the discussion of the methodological approach
with the aim of relaunching the debate on the validity of 'close
reading' today (articles by Paul B. Armstrong and Joseph North will be
distributed in advance to open the discussion).
The speakers include: Alessio Baldini, Raffaele Donnarumma, Simona
Micali, Federica Pich, Elena Porciani, Cristina Rios, Mara Santi, Olivia
Santovetti, Cristina Savettieri, Gigliola Sulis.
The talks will be both in English and Italian. Please contact the
organisers if you intend to participate so to receive copies of the
passages to be analysed by the speakers as well as the articles to be
discussed in the round-table.
