I've talked to Jeremy Yates about this and some other things late last
year. He promised to get back to me (but has not yet).
I think I managed to convince him that our stuff was actually "not
that hard" and had some performance improvements. I know they did look
at gridftp, and might have noticed it was a bit better than scp(!)
As Chris notes, the *community* (not Jeremy) was a bit leary of X509
certs, but I think that's partly because *our* overcomplicated use of
X509 (with VOMS on top etc) just makes them look more complicated than
they are.
