Project: Designing Tools to Support Young People in Location-Based Game
Authoring
Game design can be motivating and rewarding for young people. Authoring
tools can empower children to create their own games through dynamic
graphical representations which reveal complexity where needed and hide
it where it acts as a barrier. Existing authoring tools allow young
people to create certain types of games, but current tools for
location-based game authoring are too difficult for most young users to
work with. There is a growing interest in this cutting-edge area of
real-world gaming, and a pressing need to find motivating ways of
introducing children to computer science. This project will involve the
design of an authoring tool which allows 11-14 year olds without
pre-existing programming abilities to develop valuable skills through a
motivating activity.
