Participants in this course will engage with the problem of conducting survey research focussed specifically on referenda or other large-scale political events. Using authentic materials from surveys conducted on attitudes towards the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, issues will be highlighted that are particular to conducting event/topic-focussed surveys. Conclusions learnt will be generalised to potential future applications (such as the UK government proposed 2017 EU referendum). The course has two main aims: On the one hand participants will be enabled to take into account special methodological considerations improving the rigour and quality of their research outputs. On the other hand the course will encourage participants to actively think about using their research for impact and knowledge exchange strategically from the outset – as large-scale events, such as referenda, provide unique opportunities to use research for cooperations and engagement beyond academic institutions.
The course will engage with themes such as i) differences between conducting such surveys for adults and adolescents, ii) strategies for piloting, iii) adapting existing materials for targeted questionnaire design, iv) using the research for public engagement and impact, v) developing follow-up research and vi) ensuring ethical standards. The teaching will be interactive to collate knowledge and ideas from participants through a range of practical exercises.
