Trustees are needed to shape the future of Devon and Somerset's heritage
The South West Heritage Trust is looking to recruit a Chair and up to seven trustees to lead a new charitable trust to better protect, celebrate and make available the rich heritage of Devon and Somerset.
Devon and Somerset County Councils are establishing the independent charitable trust, which is expected to bring significant benefits to council tax payers.
They are inviting applications for the positions after deciding that a not-for-profit trust is the best way to provide a resilient future for the two county's heritage services.
Such a trust would open doors to financial opportunities unavailable to them as services run by the councils, attracting £10 million funding over five years.
This exciting opportunity will see successful applicants leading the newly formed trust, using their experience and passion to secure the futures of some of the most important historical and cultural attractions in the country.
The trust will have the responsibility for caring for the written evidence of the history of Devon and Somerset from the 8th Century to present day, making it available to the public digitally and through a number of purpose built facilities in Devon and Somerset.
It will also manage the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, the Somerset Brick & Tile Museum in Bridgwater and the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury, which has recently secured funding of £1.6 million for redevelopment as a major visitor attraction.
And it will have curatorial care of more than 3 million museum objects ranging from Bronze Age gold to modern art.
An open evening for people interested in applying for a position on the Trust will be held at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton Castle, on Castle Green in the centre of Taunton, on Monday 27 January. A light buffet will be available.
A Trustee recruitment pack can be downloaded from www.devon.gov.uk/record_office or www.somerset.gov.uk/heritage. For an informal discussion, to confirm attendance at the open evening, and to register interest, telephone 00823 356897 or email [log in to unmask]
