SOUND CHANGES IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH

CONTENTS
The course addresses the main controversies about the evolution of the English sound system in modern scholarship, paying special attention to the Great Vowel Shift.
FORMAT
The format is five full days comprising a series of two-hour sessions. All sessions will approach the topic using a mixture of text-based and theory-focused approaches. The instructors will attend all sessions,
although one will take responsibility for leading each session.
ASSESSMENT
Two essays of c. 3,000 words will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. They will be individually supervised and will be due some three weeks after the course.
PREPARATION
Participants will be sent, a month before the event, a set of readings, unpublished research papers and specific questions to be prepared beforehand.
ELIGIBILITY
The course is open to students enrolled on a doctoral programme, but the number of places is limited; we reserve the right to reject applicants.

Participation is free. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs and arrangements.
