Evaluating transport-related policies and practices: A geographical perspective
Travel demand is driven by a range of technical, economic, social and demographic trends, which in turn have
influenced land-use patterns. Whilst increasing mobility has offered many benefits (both real and perceived),
reliance upon fossil fuels and individual transport has also resulted in significant social, economic and environmental externalities. There is therefore a need for policy and practice interventions to address these issues.
The aim of this session is to explore how policy and planning interventions have influenced travel behaviour and
access to goods and services. As travel is a derived demand, it is anticipated that the session will explore
interventions where transport is the core focus and conversely those where transport considerations are secondary, yet vital.
It is anticipated that evaluation of these will come from a geographical perspective, drawing upon methodologies adopted across a range human-geography and related sub-disciplines, from
planning and economic geography to mobilities and social policy. In turn the impacts may be considered in
terms of the spatial and geo-demographic effect. This will give the audience a broad understanding of the application of geography to transport-related, societal issues.
