Abstract
The effectiveness of price-based demand side (DS) measures being proposed to achieve smart charging of electric vehicles (EV) rely on users’ responsiveness to financial incentives or disincentives.
However, the current practices for estimating the load associated with EV charging neglect any specific modelling of charging behaviour. They instead rely on predefined charging scenarios, e.g. “uncontrolled charging”, “delayed charging”, and others. Moreover, EV use is typically modelled replicating observed conventional vehicles patterns. This approach prevents any assessment of the effectiveness of DS measures such as time of use electricity pricing in shaping charging behaviour. Moreover, it does not explicitly account for the interactions between charging behaviour and travel choices. As a result, potential cross–effects of sector-specific DS policies (e.g. of time-depended electricity tariffs on time of travel) are not captured.
This seminar discusses the limitations of the current modelling practices, presents a framework for the joint modelling of electric mobility and charging decisions, and describes the stated response instrument developed to collect EV charging and use data for model estimation. Selected results of this modelling study, characterising the value placed by individuals on the main attributes of the charging choice are also shown. Finally, model applications for charging demand simulation are discussed.
About the Speaker
Nicolò Daina is Grantham Institute funded PhD student at the Centre for Transport Studies. He holds an undergraduate degree and an MSc in aerospace engineering from Politecnico di Torino and a Master in management of renewable energy and energy efficiency programs at Politecnico di Milano. Before joining Imperial Mr Daina worked in the Aircraft and Engine Structural Design and Optimisation group of Politecnico di Torino, the New Technology Implementation team of Fiat Powertrain Technologies and at the Laboratory for Energy Conversion of ETH.
Next CTS Seminar
Ms Maria Kamargianni from the UCL Energy Institute will be leading a seminar titled “The effects of social networking and social interaction on adolescents' travel behaviour ” at UCL on Wednesday 11th December @ 16:00
About the CTS Seminar Series
The CTS seminar series aims to facilitate discussion on current research topics in the transport field. Seminars are held jointly between the Centres for Transport Studies at Imperial College London and University College London. They are usually held on Wednesday afternoons at Imperial College London or University College London.
Seminars are free of charge and open to all interested parties. Booking is not required.
