ESRC PhD Studentships in Environmental Planning and Geography Cardiff School of Planning and Geography
The Cardiff School of Planning and Geography offers five ESRC funded PhD Studentships for the 2014/15 academic year. The awards are available on a 1+3 or +3 basis. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years, the first year for taking an MSc, followed by three years funding for a PhD. A +3 studentship provides funding for the three years of a PhD only, and assumes that the applicants already hold an MSc degree.
Four of these studentships are ‘open’ awards therefore the School welcomes proposals in a wide range of areas, and we encourage applications from human geographers, planners and other social scientists. However applicants should ensure that they have approached a potential supervisor before submitting their application to confirm that there is supervisory capacity within the School. Information on the research interests of our staff and potential supervisors can be found here (http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/cplan/about-us/staff).
The fifth studentship is dedicated to a project in animal geography, a growing research area of the school. It is available on a +3 basis only and the research topic is ‘Where the Wild Things Are: Living with and Governing Wild Boar’.
The supervisor for this studentship is Dr Gareth Enticott. Please contact Dr Enticott if you have any questions about this studentship (email: [log in to unmask])
Cardiff School of Planning and Geography
The School welcomes applications in the areas of human geography (especially cultural geography and economic geography) and planning, with preferences for the core themes of research of its four research groups. Further information about the School can be found here (http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/cplan/)
Funding
The studentships comprise an annual stipend (currently £13,795), payment of fees up to the level charged for UK/EU students (currently £3,900 p.a.) and £750 for fieldwork and conference expenses. The programme will commence in October 2014. Continuation of the award is subject to satisfactory performance.
Entry Requirements
In view of the limited number of awards and the very high standard of applications received, successful applicants must hold a Bachelors degree equivalent to a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours UK degree. They must also have (or expect to gain) a UK Masters degree (or overseas equivalent) at Merit level (with a coursework/examination average of 60% or more AND a dissertation mark of 60% or more, with no mark below 50%) or above in a relevant social science discipline. Preference will be given to candidates whose Masters degree involves a significant element of social science research methods training, and those who performed at distinction level (70% or higher) or equivalent.
How to Apply/ Residency
Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. Applicants must complete and submit the following documentation by the deadline of 4pm on Friday 21st February 2014. Note that the deadline is absolute and applications received after this time and date will not be accepted.

• An online application form (submitted to the Academic Registry via www.cardiff.ac.uk/apply)
• Covering Letter – to support your application (specifying which studentship you wish to apply for).
