COST Action MP1104, WG2 meeting: Theory and Modelling of polarisation in astrophysics

from uksp_sec [December 15, 2013]

The first meeting of the Working Group 2 (WG2) of the COST Action MP 1104 will take place in Prague from May 5 till May 8, 2014.

The meeting aims at in-depth discussions between researchers studying the complex physics of the interaction of radiation and matter in magnetised plasmas, the generation and transfer of polarized radiation, and those developing and implementing efficient numerical methods for making feasible realistic numerical simulations.

The following topics will be discussed:

(1) Physical mechanisms that produce/modify polarised radiation

(2) Theories of Spectral Line Polarisation

(3) Numerical Radiative Transfer

(4) Self-consistent modeling of polarisation in astrophysical plasmas

(5) The inversion problem: from the observed polarisation to the physical
conditions

Please, note that the number of participants is limited to 33. Beyond the
SOC members, the remaining participants will be selected by the SOC from
those who registered, on the basis of their abstracts and present research
activity. A significant number of the participants should be PhD students
and post-docs working in the field.

Diagnostics of Solar Magnetism Session during the 40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly

from Manolis Georgoulis [December 12, 2013]

We invite abstracts for Session E2.2, “Photospheric and Coronal Magnetic Field Diagnostics”, scheduled for the 40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly to be held in Moscow, Russia, August 2-10, 2014. The Session capitalizes on the unprecedented volumes of high-quality photospheric and/or chromospheric vector magnetograms continuously contributed by multiple ground- and space-based observatories. The objective of the discussion will be to outline the current state-of-the-art in terms of physically meaningful diagnostics now enabled by the wealth of these and other available data. Data-driven modeling contributions on local and global solar scales, as well as synergistic heliophysics approaches, are also of particular interest. We anticipate 7-8 invited talks, 8-10 contributed talks and a number of poster presentations.

More information about the Assembly and Session E2.2 are available at http://cospar2014moscow.com/

The deadline for abstract submission is February 14, 2013.
Please visit https://www.cospar-assembly.org/ for a timeline of the meeting.

NASA Living with a Star: Extreme Space Weather Events II Workshop
(June 9-11, 2014, LASP, Boulder, Colorado)

from Pete Riley [December 8, 2013]

Extreme space weather events are a rare yet crucial and distinct component of the Sun's variability. They have been implicated in the depletion of ozone and cloud formation, and their signatures may even be seen in tree ring records spanning more than a millennium into the past. Economically, they may have severe consequences ranging from human exposure to increased radiation to disruption of communications and electrical power. With recent advances in theory and the availability of new (and old!) datasets, together with society's continually increasing reliance on technology, a coordinated study of extreme events and their impacts at Earth is both timely and necessary.

In this second of two informal workshops on this topic, we will report on progress concerning several key scientific questions addressed during the first workshop, as well as confronting several new issues. Although there will be a few formal presentations, the working group sessions are primarily intended to be discussion-oriented. We will have poster boards available for relevant material and we encourage attendees to bring a limited set of slides to make specific points during the working group sessions.

The LWS Extreme Space Weather Events II Workshop will be held at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), University of Colorado in Boulder on June 9-11, 2014. For more information, please visit http://www.predsci.com/eswe-workshop/.
