Dear all - please see below the current PhD Opportunities on the multi-disciplinary Urban pathway of the Scottish graduate School
ESRC studentships - Urban Planning and Real Estate (3 year or 1+3 year programme)
Universities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Heriot-Watt
ESRC studentship opportunities are now available within the Urban Planning and Real Estate Pathway of the Scottish Graduate School Doctoral Training Centre. Successful applicants will be registered at one of the pathway institutions (Aberdeen, Glasgow or Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh). These are in addition to a range of other studentship opportunities available within the collaborating institutions.
Open Competition Studentships - up to 10 studentships available in SGS. Any applicant who is unsuccessful in the 'Pathway' studentships competition, but who passes a quality threshold, will be entered into the Open competition. To be entered in the Open Competition you must first apply for the Pathway Competition.
Collaborative Studentships - there are up to 9 studentships available in SGS. Projects to be developed with an academic within the relevant pathway institution, and a partner in the private, public or third sector (Deadline: 10th February)
The Urban Planning and Real Estate Pathway (UPREP) is for students in predominately policy and practice-focused interdisciplinary study areas, and draws on architecture, geography, economics, political science and sociology, as well as professional knowledge in planning, property development, housing and urban policy. The partners are the Universities of Glasgow: Urban Studies: http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/urbanstudies/; Aberdeen (Real Estate Group, Business School) http://www.abdn.ac.uk/business/research/crer.php; and Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh http://www.sbe.hw.ac.uk/research.htm (Institutes for Housing, Urban and Real Estate Research and Building and Urban Design, within the School of the Built Environment)
UPREP will offer 1+3 and (for suitably pre-trained candidates) +3 routes. UPREP builds upon 1+3 ESRC-recognised training programmes, the MRes Urban Research (Glasgow), the MRes in Urban Studies (Heriot-Watt) and the MRes Degree in Business Research (Aberdeen) which includes a real estate-specific stream.
Each partner participates in wider core social sciences research methodology training as part of respective University level social sciences post graduate training and then offers a different menu of specialisms, plus a dissertation, that constitute an MRes. The pathway as a whole enables PhD students in planning and cognate subjects in Scotland substantial choice to match their own research and career ambitions. The pathway institutions work closely with the key professional bodies in the field: the Royal Town Planning Institute, the Chartered Institute of Housing, and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
