Dear Members of the list,
I am a PhD student in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University in the United States. I'm writing today to see if a few list members with experience and expertise in any of the many design areas would mind giving a little feedback on an instrument I plan to use in my dissertation.
For those who might be interested or willing here is a little background. Briefly I am planning on using a gaming platform to have first year engineering students do a small set of design activities, mostly based around conceptual/ideation practices. Given the kinds of activities (ideation, concept generation) and the collaborative nature of the platform, I argued in my proposal defense that these activities should affect a set of design skills or related skills, namely ideation, reflection, iteration and collaboration.
The study is mixed methods, however for the quantitative component I want to measure changes in design thinking. A survey instrument is limited in some ways for measuring changes in design thinking, but it will be complimented by in depth interviews and is intended to broadly capture some important changes. My committee, advisor and myself were not able to find or aware of any instrument I could use to measure changes in design thinking for these skills so I started developing one based off past research findings and the feedback from a small set of professors with design expertise at my university.
If you could take a moment to look at the survey and give feedback on: the appropriateness of the questions for the skill/practice domain, preferences or suggestions for wording/phrasing (each question has multiple iterations for now), topics covered under each skill/practice and other related feedback, it would greatly help me.
Please email any feedback or other questions to [log in to unmask] off-list. Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
Best,
Corey Schimpf
