CHI 2014 Workshop on Socially Engaged Arts Practice in HCI
One day workshop, part of the CHI 2014 annual ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Science, Toronto, Canada 26th April – 1st May 2014: Workshop to be held on Saturday 26th April

Socially engaged research that focuses on complex societal challenges is becoming of increasing interest within the HCI community. One intersecting area that has received little attention is socially engaged arts practice that aims to encourage debate around societal concerns such as the role of technology in areas such as sustainability, inclusion, community, identity and the politics of participation. This workshop will draw together and build on existing research that aligns with socially engaged arts practice, to foster critical exploration and creative collaborations with a diverse group of HCI researchers, artists and other creators, for whom critically making, and making things happen (events, exhibitions and performances) is often at the core of what they do.

We invite the submission of 2-4 page position papers tackling subjects relevant, but not limited to, the following topics:

•	Theoretical accounts or conceptually framings of socially engaged arts practice in HCI research
•	Case studies and examples of socially engaged arts approaches in HCI, STS, social sciences or anthropology
•	Personal accounts or critical reflections on previous practitioner experiences with socially engaged arts practice
•	Examples of interdisciplinary projects that have combined socially engaged arts approaches with more traditional qualitative methods of engagement and dissemination of research
•	Proposals for making and disseminating a creative social action for the workshop and conference
