Hello everyone,
Here at the Isle of Wight College we offer four different information skills sessions on:
1. How to use the library (this is an hour session getting students familiar with the library and what it has to offer - much more detail than an induction)
2. Referencing and plagiarism
3. Quality Online Resources (covers detailed access to eBooks and subscribed resources)
4. Using the Internet (how to find quality information on the internet)
Each session is tailored to a specific subject area and we have differentiated materials for Levels 2 and 3+.
Feedback this year shows that students who have either transferred from different courses, or have moved up a level feel that they have already received the sessions and shouldn't have them repeated. In most cases the classes are mixed with some students who have had a session and some who haven't.
Have any other colleges had this concern? How do you manage information skills content year on year? We do review our resources annually, but the general messages/themes are the same. How do you sustain interest for returning students?
Any thoughts and ideas are very welcome. I am happy to summarise for the list.
Thanks in anticipation.
Kind regards,
Ruth
