All,
I would also be interested in this as I need to start work on the Local Listings for our local airfield. The site has been disrupted to some extent, with loses of sections of runway, most of the dispersal pads, the magazines and bomb stores etc but on the other hand retains air raid shelters, machine gun range, inter-war civilian hangar and club house, two large B2 hangars etc and also a dispersed site out in the village which retains two large Stanton shelters and earthworks where R&F was levelled to give flat building platforms for military huts. I'm not sure whether to have it as a single entry in the Local List or individually list each feature (although I am edging towards the former in the same way as I dealt with our Municipal Cemeteries).
Cheers,
Hugh

Hi Veronica
I am looking at applying for the designation of the remains of a WW1 airbase in East Sussex. The hangar from this site was moved to Wimbledon and is still extant and Grade II listed. I would therefore be very interested in the revision of your guidance document.

Subject: Military airfields and local listing
Dear HER Forum members,
With colleagues at English Heritage I am working on the revision of our guidance document Historic Military Aviation Sites: Conservation management guidance. This document covers the full range of military airfields (RFC, RAF, RNAS, USAF, USAAF etc) and while it has been widely used, is now out of date.
While we presume that most HERs will include reference to such former airfields, would anyone know of any examples where Local Listing has been used to identify airfield structures of local note, and in particular whether such local designations have been used successfully to positively manage such sites? If so then I'd be very pleased to hear from you.
Many thanks,
Veronica
