Our Summer School this year consists of three courses which may be of interest - particularly to PhD students and postdocs.
1) Analysis of Genetic Association Studies
2) Introduction to R
3) Longitudinal Modelling in Mplus: integrating Biological Data

15th MRC SGDP Centre Summer School
16th – 20st June 2014
Institute of Psychiatry, KCL, De Crespigny Park, Box P080, London SE5 8AF
Summer School Directors: Frühling Rijsdijk, Cathy Fernandes & Zarsh Divecha
The MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre is a unique interdisciplinary environment in which to attend this introduction into the technical and conceptual aspects of behavioural genomics.
The Summer School is suitable for:
• Graduates from related disciplines
• PhD students starting lab work or analysis of genotype data
• First year post-docs, particularly post-docs transferring to these fields
• Psychiatrists and other clinicians looking for more specific research training
The Summer school represents an unrivalled opportunity to attend lectures by experts in the field including Francesca Happe, Robert Plomin, Ben Neale and Jon Mill. The Institute consists of parallel 5-day courses involving both lectures and practical sessions in addition to a more general Shared Component. This year’s courses are in:
Analysis of Genetic Association Studies.
This course will teach the basic concepts of statistical genetics with a focus on genomewide association studies. The course combines formal lectures with hands-on practical sessions, using software such PLINK and HAPLOVIEW. Lectures will be illustrated with examples from on-going research projects. Topics covered will include: design, data quality control, interpretation of statistical tests of association, visualization and presentation of results, meta-analysis and analysis of rare variants. Scientific Directors: Cathryn Lewis and Paul O’Reilly
Introduction to R.
R is an interactive computing environment and programming language designed for statistical analysis and graphics, widely used in many fields of research including genetics and genomics. The course will emphasize the fundamentals of the R language in an intensive format where each student has a computer and 50% of the time is spent on practical exercises. Scientific Director: Leo Schalkwyk
Longitudinal Modelling in Mplus: integrating Biological Data.
This course develops the statistical theory required to understand longitudinal and latent models of growth and change, with the emphasis on data-analytic practice including interpretation of model assumptions and results. Special focus will be on research questions that lead to the use of auto-regressive path analysis, latent growth curves and general mixture models. The course will also highlight how ‘traditional’ application of these models can be generalized to include biological data like brain imaging, DNA methylation, molecular genetics and infectious diseases. Scientific Directors: Edward Barker & Andrew Pickles
Shared Component: These morning sessions will give conceptual overviews and applications of molecular and statistical genetic methods. Summaries are presented of research using these methods in common complex traits and disorders, such as cognitive ability, conduct problems, autism & depression.
Application process
Applications are made via our website and require some background information and reasons for applying to the program. Applications will be accepted until courses are full, with a final application date of June 1st.
