Newcastle University has quite a few opportunities for funded study in linguistics at Master's and PhD level. In the School of Modern Languages, we have expertise in Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Quechua, Spanish and Yiddish, so, if you are interested in the sociolinguistics of one of those languages, you would probably be based here. Full details and people to contact about the various funding routes can be found here:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/sml/about/news/item/PG-Funding
I am not one of the official contacts listed, but obviously I am at Newcastle, so I'm perfectly willing to answer questions as well.
People outside the EU should note that we do have awards that are available to anyone, from any country. Many awards available in the EU are only available to recipients from an EU country, but that's not true for all of them, so, wherever you or your student are from, we have an award for you!
Looking forward to hearing from you, then - and please do consider applying!
