Announcing a series of events exploring new directions in critical cartography January – July 2014
This series of monthly seminars brings together leading geographers and ethnographers, environmentalists and computer scientists, artists and writers, in a shared conversation around the possibilities of challenging cartographies which marginalize or pathologise populations perceived to be obstacles to ‘progress’, ‘modernity’ or ‘public order’. It will also explore strategies of ‘counter-mapping’ linked to community action, urban social movements and creative subversion.
Each session combines theoretical and practical presentations around a specific theme: Mapping the Field (January); Hidden Histories (February);Grounding Knowledge(March); Marginalised bodies, Liminal Spaces (May); Constructing New Geographies (June); Communities of Resistance (July) with a concluding session, Mapping the Future.
Contributors include Bob Gilbert, Iain Boal, Michael Edwards, Rob Imrie, Adam Dant, Ken Worpole.
The series is organised by the Living Maps Network as part of a programme of initiatives designed to produce a re-mapping of East London’s past, present and future. The seminars are hosted by the Young Foundation, London East Research Institute (UEL), Urban Lab (Bartlett School of Architecture), the Building Exploratory, Birkbeck Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies, and the Cities Centre (QMC)
