Head Office Swindon

We’re the world’s biggest building society and in today’s economic climate, our reputation for being open, honest and trustworthy is benefiting our customers. Nationwide offers a complete range of financial services to 13 million customers and our business is underpinned by a commercial operation that’s keenly competitive and constantly evolving. Right now, right across our business, we’re aiming higher, thinking smarter and acting faster than ever before, and we’re looking for people who have the talent and drive to boost our performance still further.

The Retail Credit Risk area within Nationwide Building Society is responsible for defining and managing lending policy, supported by rigorous analysis to ensure that lending policy balances volumes, risk and reward effectively.
As part of the expanding role and importance of risk management, the Retail Operational Modelling team is seeking to recruit talented statistical and mathematical modellers who can demonstrate commercial nous and good team skills in their careers to date.

Currently we have vacancies at a range of levels from post graduate entry to senior analyst level. You will have a good degree (2.1 or higher) and will be highly numerate. You will be joining a diverse team. Our Risk team includes people with backgrounds in Maths, Stats, Engineering, Science, Operational Research Finance and Economics.

The roles will involve you in the design, development and maintenance of risk models across the lifecycle of a product (i.e. from application through to collections). Our team is responsible for both the Secured (Prime and Buy to Let Mortgages) and Unsecured (Credit Card, Personal Loan and Current Account) portfolios, ensuring that models used in critical business decisions are performing in line with business expectations. The wide scope of the team promotes a varied role, with the opportunity to get involved in different areas, supporting risk decisions and adding business value.

A more challenging role

For the Analyst entry level role, under the guidance of the Modelling Manager, you’ll help to:

•	Manage and create large data sets using SAS for modelling, analysis and reporting.
•	Develop scorecards/models, employing statistical techniques to validate and enhance the risk models.
•	Effectively track and monitor model performance, providing regular updates to the senior management.
•	Highlight areas of under performance and recommend improvement solutions.
•	Identify new opportunities to enhance risk decision-making and strategies across the wider business.
•	Undertake ad-hoc analysis.
•	Build relationships with team members and across the business to ensure optimal returns for modelling.

For the Senior Analyst roles you’ll also be expected to:

•	Work with stakeholders across the business to safely implement new models.
•	Provide expert opinion on the use of these models.
•	Effectively communicate model performance to risk committees and senior management.
•	Mentor and manage less experienced modellers.

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate:

•	Strong quantitative degree is preferable and relevant work experience for the more senior roles
•	Experience in Mathematical and Statistical Modelling with an ability to apply different modelling techniques.
•	An aptitude for working with data, carrying out analytics, interpreting results and making recommendations.
•	An ability to work to a high standard of accuracy and present information in a logical and professional format.
•	Strong verbal and written skills enabling you to present to audiences with a range of technical backgrounds.
•	A logical and analytical mind with a passion for solving complex problems that deliver real business benefit.
•	The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
•	A genuine desire and aptitude to develop a career with a leading financial services player.
•	Expert knowledge of one or more statistical packages. (SAS,SQL, SPSS, Minitab etc)

The rewards you deserve.

If you put a lot in, it’s only fair you should get a lot out. Help us continue to offer customers the best possible experience, and we’ll give you all the support, recognition and rewards you deserve. As well as a great working environment and plenty of scope for development and growth, you can expect a generous package that includes pension, life assurance, healthcare and bonus scheme.
