Challenges and Difficulties for Older People, Aoife Ahern, UCD

Jordanstown campus (room 2F06)
***The seminar will be followed by an update on transport research opportunities, by Ciaran Prunty EU Thematic Lead (Engineering)/ NI Horizon 2020 Contact Point (NICP)***
The topic
With an ageing population and poor rural public transport, the challenges faced by older people who wish to travel in rural areas are great. This presentation will reflect on some of those challenges, drawing upon a series of focus groups conducted in Ireland and Northern Ireland with older people. Particular findings demonstrate different challenges for older men to those experienced by older women, and particular difficulties relating to accessing health services.

Aoife’s research interests are: links and relationships between land use and transport; transport equity and access to services; rural transport; public transport operations and planning, sustainable infrastructure development; road engineering safety, engineering education and critical thinking in the curriculum.
