I have just finished transcribing the following article:
A Peep at the Mining Districts
Chambers Journal of Popular Literature, Science and Arts Vol X111 (Edinburgh 1860) pp174-76
It doesn’t give any technical information, but is mostly a social history overview of colliery/village life. A Tremenheere report is quoted frequently (no date given) but Gartsherrie + Eglington, Caprington, Annadale, Barleith + Dollar plus collieries of Merry & Cunningham feature. You need to wade through some challenging Victorian attitudes and flowery language – but there are some interesting descriptive and factual nuggets. (No images).
