Hi Sarah
Its one of those how long is a piece of string questions....
Many organisations limit the size of images uploaded to the web simply because they can only afford a finite size server to host the images.
For the Black Country History website we decided on the (arbitrary) size of 600 pixels in width, this was arrived at through a process of negotiation between the different partners - some partners were happy to put on much higher resolution images but not everyone agreed so we had to compromise. Also we were uploading thousands of images and were looking at a website that would continue to grow as new photography was undertaken but had a limited budget for hosting so we had to think about scalability and costs as part of the equation too.
Also sometimes its about being pragmatic about what non-techie colleagues can do so although embedding IPTC data into images such as copyright owner, contact details, credit etc. is a good idea we didn't have the capability to do that.
Best wishes
Linda Ellis

Subject: [MCG] Online image size guidelines?
Is there any advice or set of guidelines about the size and quality of online museum artefact images or online artwork images?
Also any advice on image watermarking or embedding IPTC data into images such as copyright owner, contact details, credit etc?
In the past we have always made sure our images are small size 300 pixels at longest edge and 72 dpi. We'd like to make our online images larger but would like to know of any security settings we should be using.
Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.
