At the British Geological Survey, we are making hundreds of thousands of high resolution images (up to 7216 x 5412 pixels) freely available under the Open Government Licence. We use the JP2 (JPEG2000) format that allows quick web access to large files
See, for example
Hydrocarbon well core: http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/index.html?id=20120704/S00050923 (One out of 125,000)
Rock thin sections under the polarising microscope: http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/britrocks.html?id=250000/258489 (One out of 100,000)
Early geological maps: http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/historicmaps.html?id=1003426
We have used a Creative Commons Attribution- Share Alike - Non-Commercial licence for a collaborative palaeontological project - http://www.3d-fossils.ac.uk/ - which includes high resolution anaglyphs - http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/gb3d.html?id=/Stereograms/NMW/P848705.jp2 - and 3d digital models as well as conventional images.
Personally, I now find low resolution images rather disappointing.

Why are you not providing images at high resolution, under an open licence?
