Dear Tony,
Many thanks for this. While there isn't a dialogue with data.gov.uk as such, we have started to investigate the publication of museum datasets on the platform. We already publish the UK list of public library addresses as an open dataset (http://data.gov.uk/dataset/uk-public-library-contacts-14032012) and plan to do the same with museum location data (based on the data in the MuseumsUK - www.museumsuk.net platform and Culture Grid).
I did speak briefly with the Arts Council England yesterday about making greater use of the data in the Museum Accreditation Scheme in this context. Although we have a reasonable dataset on museum locations (and Culture 24 also has an excellent dataset), Accreditation is really the most current and up-to-date data we have. I am hopeful that we will be able to work with ACE to open this up in the coming months.
It is also worth noting that this is a topic in which the Cabinet Office and DCMS have taken a very strong and active interest in recent months. I know they have been in discussion with a number of the National museums about publishing open data (and of course, there are lots of examples like the BM SPARQL end-point and the recent tate data release where the Nationals have started to do this already). It is also a central pillar of the recent change in policy at the Heritage Lottery Fund to support digital projects, but only where the resulting data is freely available for re-use.
The key thing for me - as I mentioned in the recent blog post on this topic (http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/blog/2098-openmuseums) - is that we keep coming up against resistance to publishing collections as open data on the basis that it might represent a loss of potential future income. We are working hard to assemble the mounting body of evidence that the contrary is true - museums that open up data tend to see increased commercial activity - so anyone who has relevant info on this, please do forward it to the list or email me directly!
All best,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Is there a dialogue with data.gov.uk? We have just placed our Collection data on the site, having already completed Europeana and Your Paintings streams. Data.gov.uk does include data from DCMS's NDPBs and I believe it is hoped that collection data may be on their one day too. I can put you in touch with data.gov.uk off list if you would like.

Subject: [MCG] BBC signs Memoranda of Understanding with Europeana, ODI, OKFN & Mozilla Foundation
Dear colleagues,
With apologies to those of you that will already have seen this news via other channels, but I thought it was important to flag up via MCG the announcement that the BBC has signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Europeana Foundation, the Open Data Institute, the Open Knowledge Foundation and the Mozilla Foundation to enable them to work together on common priorities including the publication of open data and the promotion of open standards in web development.
I think this is an important step in 'mainstreaming' the role of cultural heritage organisations in publishing open data from their collections, and provides an opportunity to bring collections-related content and information to a far wider audience. For further information, see the Telegraph article on the announcement <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/10472903/BBC-throws-weight-b
ehind-open-data-movement.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&
utm_campaign=market+watch> .
If anyone on list is interested in sharing their collections information as open data, and making it available to Europeana, the simplest way to do this is through the Culture Grid, which is maintained by Knowledge Integration Ltd on behalf of the Collections Trust.
Sharing data through the Culture Grid is simple - we can take structured data and images from your collections system or you can access an online platform and enter them directly yourself. We can then share them with Europeana via a periodic harvest, as well as providing access to a range of useful tools and widgets such as a collections search box generator which you can host on your own website.
All data shared with Europeana is shared under the Europeana Data Exchange Agreement, <http://pro.europeana.eu/web/guest/data-exchange-agreement> which permits Europeana to share it under a CC0 license. We are also currently working with a group of software providers under the SPECTRUM Partners Scheme to embed the capability to share data quickly and easily with Europeana into your Collections Management Systems (as part of the Europeana Inside project - www.europeanainside.eu).
We are always keen to hear from UK museums that want to open up and share their collections information online, so do please drop me a line at this email address if you would like to receive further information.
Yours sincerely,
Nick
