Subject: UK Memory of the World nominations
Are your collections something to shout about?
Why not tell the world?
Don’t forget that nominations are now open for the U.K. National Register for the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.
The closing date is 17 January 2014 and as the programme is moving to a two-year cycle the next opportunity will not come till 2016!
This is the fourth round of nominations following the Register’s hugely successful launch in 2010. The Register is part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Memory of the World Programme, which helps promotes outstanding documentary heritage. It contains documentary heritage that is considered to be culturally significant to the U.K. Discover the 41 items and collections currently on the U.K. Register at:

UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme promotes preservation of and access to the world’s archive holdings and library collections. The vision of the programme is a simple but powerful one – the world’s documentary heritage belongs to all, should be fully preserved and protected for all and, with due recognition of cultural mores and practicalities, should be permanently accessible to all without hindrance. Nominations to the U.K. Register will be considered against a range of criteria including authenticity, rarity, integrity, threat and social, and spiritual or community significance. The full nomination documents are available at: www.unesco.org.uk/UK_Register<http://www.unesco.org.uk/UK_Register>. Anyone can make a nomination and all archive formats are eligible, including digital and audiovisual documents.
A simple and quick nomination form with outstanding potential.
So why not join a growing global network and draw international attention to your collection through a U.N. agency. Visit www.unesco.org.uk/UK_Register<http://www.unesco.org.uk/UK_Register> for further details of how to apply. The deadline for nominations is Friday January 17th 2014. The names of the successful nominations will be announced in June 2014.
The Value of The Memory of the World Programme
In its report Wider Value of UNESCO to the UK 2012 – 13 to the government, the UK National Commission for UNESCO states that the net benefit to the nation of its UNESCO connections is £90 million per year. More specifically, the Memory of the World Programme is worth £320,000 per year. The institutions with items and collections on the U.K. Register have already seen outstanding results, including:
▪ Increased visitor and volunteer levels.
▪ Raised profile of the collection within their organisation, including additional funding commitments.
▪ Visits from local politicians and MPs.
▪ Newly-inspired staff and volunteers.
▪ Used in support of funding bids.
In a paper presented to a UNESCO Colloquium, Andrew Green reported on the positive effect that having documentary heritage Inscribed on the UK National Register has had for collections. The paper will be posted on the website of the UKNC in the near future. In the October edition of the Museum’s Journal, Stephen Deuchar, Director of the Art Fund at the Wedgwood Museum, said: “Putting the museum and its UNESCO-recognised collection at the heart of redevelopment plans could see many thousands of people visiting the site each year - a hugely exciting prospect.”
