If you’ve recently supervised a student dissertation related to health information or know of a colleague who has, then I’d be keen to hear from you. I’m on the editorial team for the Health Information and Libraries Journal (HILJ) and I edit the regular feature called ‘Dissertations into practice’. I’m currently on the lookout for new students and new articles. The feature has been well received since its initial appearance in March 2012 and the thinking behind it remains the same: to encourage students and young professionals to write for publication and to highlight the potential impact of student research for practice. We welcome a broad range of topics and so far we’ve published articles from postgrad and PhD students who have investigated the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the NHS, looked at the provision of health information by public libraries and evaluated the systems for retrieving information about adverse drug effects – to name but a few. Articles can be co-written with a dissertation or workplace supervisor and are essentially an extended abstract of the student dissertation, highlighting the research methods used, the key findings and the implications for practice. I have produced guidelines for the student authors and give them as much support along the way as I can. If you know of a project which you think might fit please get in touch with me - I'll do the rest!
