Hi there

I've been using something called Format Factory to convert lecture recordings that come in over 2 or 3GB. It's available free at http://www.pcfreetime.com and converts all sorts of video, audio, image files, .iso, plus has its own basic editor/video joiner. The results are really good and it's never let me down. I've even got teaching staff using it to record and upload their own lectures!

I've found the best results for our Helix server are to convert to MP4 using the H264 codec in Format Factory and scale the video down to 50%. That brings the file size down enough to upload to Helix.

See what you think.

Hi Steve/Tim,

Our Helix system is limited to 2GB uploads at the moment (with the recent HML upgrade) so it might still be a problem for your students with larger file sizes... We're still having to allow students to burn to DVD, Blu-ray or even submit their hard drives.

Does anyone know a good programme for PC (as opposed to Mac) for students to compress video files, or any files?

Regards, James

Hi Steve

We're investigating Helix as well and it's looking really good for video, I think it's just limited to video on the submission side though. The workflow is exactly what we want for large files, along with email receipts of course.

Kind regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

We are investigating whether using the Helix Media Library will help with large files - particularly Video. I believe they are close to releasing a building block that would allow this and integrate with the Grade Centre. Users would add the video by using the Mash up function and tutors could reply with text comments, an attached file or another video as feedback.

I'd be interested in finding out if anyone else is considering or has implemented a similar solution.

Best wishes,

Subject: Large file submissions

Hi all,

We are currently looking for solution to support online submission of large files (1GB+), these files are often video but the nature of the assessment means that academic staff need access to the actual files rather than a streamed version.

Currently we support this using the Blackboard Content System by setting up folders in the Institution content area, manually setting permissions and then creating adaptively released links to these folders in our courses for either individual students or groups. As all the folder permissions need to be set manually this process is very time consuming and open to user error on our account. We do however find that taking this approach does allow students to upload files of 4GB+.

There are of course problems caused by the fact that the upload is managed by the browser and so any connection interruptions mean that students need to start over and additionally, dependant on browser, students don't get any kind of indication for upload progress. The other feature missing from this approach is that we would also like an email receipt to be generated for the students.

We have tried to use the Bb Assignment tool but found that the Java handler doesn't reliably handle any uploads over 500MB, we have raised this with Bb support but they have said that the java handler settings could be adjusted for larger file sizes but this could potentially cause the whole system to become unstable. I don't quite understand why the Content System can handle the uploads but not the Assignment tool but we can't take any risks as soon as stability is mentioned.

Our current line of investigation is looking at the possibility of using a separate system to handle and store large uploads which would then be integrated with Bb via a Text Editor mashup, the assignment handling would then be safely delivered by the Bb Assignment tool.

I would just like to know how others might be handling large file submissions and whether anyone might have done something similar with the mashup approach?

Many thanks,

Tim
