Building the future leadership of the Jewish community among Russian
speakers rests on developing a broad knowledge base. Brandeis is in an
exceptionally strong position to construct and disseminate this base of
knowledge, building on its tradition of excellence in Jewish studies, the
study of Eastern Europe, and research into contemporary Jewish life.

The Brandeis-Genesis Institute awards grants to support research projects in
multiple disciplines on Russian Jewish experience. These research projects
may come from various disciplines, including but not limited to sociology,
linguistics, history, arts, psychology, education and religion. Eligible
research projects may cover various time periods - from Imperial Russia and
Soviet era to Post-soviet contemporary period.  The geographic regions
researched may range from the Former Soviet Union to United States and
Canada, Israel, Germany, Australia and other regions. The grants are funded
by the Genesis Philanthropy Group.

The Brandeis-Genesis Institute offers two types of research grants:
Graduate Research Grants

The Brandeis-Genesis Institute offers grants for thesis, pre-dissertation
and dissertation research in Russian Jewish studies. Grants up to $2000 will
be awarded to cover travel expenses (such as airfare, meals, and lodging),
research expenses (such as visits to archives & museums), purchase of
research materials, such as microfilm (but excluding books), as well as
costs of data collection and processing.

Eligibility and Requirements

All students enrolled in recognized doctoral or masters programs in the U.S.
and overseas are eligible to apply. Overseas applications are welcome.

The awards offered by the Brandeis-Genesis Institute to students pursuing
Masters degrees will not exceed $1,000 and may cover up to 100% of the total
project cost

The awards offered by the Brandeis-Genesis Institute to students enrolled in
PhD. programs will not exceed $2,000 and may cover up to 100% of the total
project cost. We encourage applicants to seek matching funds for their
projects and specify the availability of matching funds on the application
form where appropriate. Brandeis University students are encouraged to
submit proposals for matching funds to the Tauber Institute for the Study of
European Jewry and the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies in their
respective research fields.

The grantees are expected to complete their projects within one or maximum
two academic years. Upon completion of the project, award recipients will be
expected to submit a report documenting their use of the funds and their
research findings.

Faculty Research Grants

The Brandeis-Genesis Institute offers grants to established scholars
pursuing research on questions of significance to the field of Russian
Jewish studies and Russian Jewish experience.

Eligibility and Requirements 

The awards are open to applicants irrespective of religion or place of
residence. The awards offered by the Brandeis-Genesis Institute will not
exceed $2,500 and will cover up to 50% of the total cost of the proposed
research project. Should the grant be awarded applicants will be required to
provide proof (e.g. additional award letter or a written statement that the
balance will be self-funded) of the availability of matching funds to cover
the remaining 50% of the cost of the project by May 30, 2014.

The award covers all eligible project related costs, including travel, data
collection and processing, translation and work time (not to exceed 25% of
the total cost of the project)

The grantees are expected to complete their projects within a maximum of two
academic years after receiving the award. Upon completion of the project,
award recipients will be expected to submit a report documenting their use
of the funds and their research findings.
