Good morning,

I had a very positive experience 10 years ago when approached to help with the identification of a Spanish manuscript. We arranged a formal donation to the Malaga local record office in a small event with an officer from the Spanish consulate attending and the local London papers. Perhaps, the owner could be tempted to donate if a Scottish officer or archivist or consulate officer were willing to praise him and say thank you in person in the Spanish town where the vendor now lives... with some local coverage... and Spanish wine.

If, and this is a big if... the British vendor lives in Málaga or near, I have the name of the director of the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Málaga who still is the woman who came to London to receive the 17th c Málaga Rent Book ten years ago. She was very grateful and I believe she would be willing to host any donation event.

In my (almost identical) experience, people who part with money also part with their better natures when it comes to the purchase of archives of doubtful provenance!

I don't want to seem naive, but how about appealing to the seller's better nature....
Could you outline in a non-accusatory way where its rightful home should be and the value that it would have there?
Perhaps take it to the local paper in Helensburgh and see if they can mount a campaign of either publicity or fund-raising?
I see that the seller is based in Spain which might make the PR approach less effective, but etsy seems like a site that values integrity and a gesture like that might help the seller's profile or indeed etsy's profile.

Even by the jiscmail reaction, we can see this is a potentially emotive story...

Best Regards,
Jane, Jura Lives

Hi all,

It appears that the Helensburgh Town Hall visitors' book is for sale on Etsy. This includes Royal signatures. I have no idea how this came to be in private hands. Is there anything we can do to get it back (other than pay upwards of £1500?)
