Call for Chapters – Book proposal to be submitted to Berg publishers
Editors:
Marta Vilar Rosales, ICS-University of Lisbon
Monica Janowski, SOAS-University of London
Proposed title of book: Food, Crisis and Creativity
Details of the book
In a wide range of personal and global contexts - ranging from scarcity due to war through environmental disaster to "comfort food" in difficult personal moments - food becomes particularly visible in times and contexts of crisis. Food is a lens through which to frame and understand the ways in which individuals and groups deal with crises. In a context of crisis, food can allow individuals to draw on creative and emotional reserves from the past, adjust to new subjective and objective conditions in the present, and generate new ways of moving into the future.
With this book, we aim to investigate creative responses to economic, political, social and cultural crisis and critical moments – defined as such by actors themselves – using food as medium. By creative responses, we mean responses which attempt to take control of the situation in a way which creates positive opportunities and puts a more positive spin on the situation in which actors find themselves.
We welcome contributions which, through focusing on creative practices in food production and consumption, bring attention to its centrality in critical moments, its potential to frame and express cultural and subjective agency, and its ability to materialize and manage identity and belonging. Using the lens of food, we hope to encourage discussion of the extent of creative agency in critical moments; and of the processes of generating practice based on imaginative thoughts, concepts and musings. We are particularly interested in responses which are taken for the benefit of the kin, national or other groups and networks to which actors belong.
We are keen to develop cross-disciplinary dialogue. We encourage contributions from colleagues working in anthropology, geography, history, sociology, philosophy, gender studies, business and management, design, literary studies, health and nutrition and psychology, as well as related fields.
We welcome empirical and theoretical works adopting a variety of different theoretical approaches and methods, including, but not limited to: Ethnographic Methods, Symbolic Interactionism, Actor-Network Theory, Discourse Analysis, Visual Methods, Phenomenological Approaches, Post-Colonial Approaches, Critical Theory and Gender Studies Perspectives. Papers may examine historical and contemporary contexts, and comparative, cross-cultural studies are particularly welcome. We strongly encourage contributions from emerging as well as established scholars.
