Hi Anthony
The NDA publication 'Safe Evacuation For All' may be of interest. This
publication helps building managers to ensure that they plan for the
evacuation of all users of a building, particularly people with
disabilities.

Hi Anthea,
Thanks for your email.
If you have any current work which you consider is relevant and you’d like
to see on the site, please simply email to me a link and some introductory
text and I’ll get it loaded. I don’t need the document itself or what ever
the material is, just a method for people to get access to it.
It doesn’t have to have a formal status ie a code of practice other than
being accredited by the people it affects; eg users opinions from a focus
group etc., or a professional body or piece of relevant research.

Dear Anthony,
Many thanks for this. I worked closely with Selwyn Goldsmith when we
were both at DOE.
Best wishes,
Anthea

Subject: [ACCESSIBUILT] Designing for Diversity
Hi All,
North Somerset Council has set up a new website promoting physical
access design for all equality groups, not just disabled people. It
list any relevant equality design guidance so everything from Selwyn
Goldsmith’s grounding breaking book to local design guidance from
organisations around the country. Its aimed at everyone from
professional designers to businesses and laypeople working with
community groups.
Entitled TheAccessOfficer the number of references is currently being
built up and will substantially grow over the next few months. Some
material is specifically aimed at North Somerset Council, in
particular the overarching guide on how to create people centred
design and promote multi user spaces not simply multi use.
Material is ranked either as essential or useful depending on whether
it’s a part of legislation or more local guidance etc. The aim is
that designers think more about who they are designing for, discover
their needs and then look for the specific guidance that meets their
needs, rather than starting with guidance and bolting it on to a
concept. See the council’s document “Designing for Diversity” for
more information.
A key feature is the tag cloud that allows you to pick the issues or
word your thinking of to find the guidance and not to have to try and
remember the author’s long winded title!
Any comments by email through the site will be welcome to help us
revise and improve it as its still in its infancy.
Regards,
Anthony Rylands
