Hi
We have 8 non-cartridge based gas analysers and I have very little problems with them, maintenance is once a week takes about an hour and staff on the wards look after the day to day bits. We had a cartridge based system on trial and I found I was spending more time there changing packs than I did with the others.
I think it really does depend on how well the end users look after their equipment, we all know that if they were in the lab we'd have very few issues with a cartridge or non-cartridge analyser.

We have 14 non-cartridge based analysers. Two staff members go out in the morning to tend to their maintenance and consumable needs. Then the POCT team monitor connectivity software throughout the day and respond to failures as necessary. I would conservatively say that 1.0 wte staff member is used daily for the upkeep of our non-cartridge service.

Dear POCT brains,
Anyone willing to share an evaluation protocol for blood gas machines?
We are currently cartridge based - but I feel that we do so much reactive troubleshooting it may well be equivalent to proactive maintenance on a non-cartridge system. And at least maintenance can be scheduled.
Opinions?
For those with non-cartridge based systems - could you give me an idea of how much time POCT staff spend doing scheduled maintenance, and how much un-scheduled maintenance and downtime there is?
thanks
Katy
