In November 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter, after years of
searching, discovered Tutankhamen's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. It
was the only royal tomb in the valley that hadn't been plundered, and the
Western world was entranced by the treasures recovered from the "boy king's"
burial chambers. Some women of means weren't content with mere intellectual
appreciation, Bob Brier recounts in "Egyptomania," his patchy but genial
