Wednesday 20th November - Comedy and Science Communication
18.30 - 20.30, Institute of Education, London. (Committee Room 1)
The last few years has seen a wave of comedians turn to the work of scientists for inspiration and material, a trend which could perhaps be seen as following a similar path to 'sciart' within performance. At the same time there has been a growing interest within science communication and public engagement in the use of comedy for broadening the public impact and understanding of research, leading to the development of number of events such as Bright Club in which scientists perform stand-up about their research. This event seeks to address this trend, with experts on science communication sharing a platform with professional comedians to discuss why they seek to bring science and comedy together in their work, what difficulties this poses for both performer and audience and what potential benefits it holds.
Confirmed speakers:
Robin Ince, Comedian and Presenter
Dr. Steve Cross, Founder of Bright Club and Head of Public Engagement at UCL
Timandra Harkness, Comedian and Presenter
Dr. Alice Bell, Research Fellow at the University of Sussex.
