Dear colleagues,
Apologies to those of you that have received this already via MCN, but I
thought it was worth re-circulating the link to the 2013 NMC Horizon
Report looking at technology in museums.
The report is freely available online at
http://www.nmc.org/publications/2013-horizon-report-museum.
The report identifies 6 key emerging trends in museums over the next 3-5
years:
* #BYOD (Bring your own device) & the need for Wifi in museums
to support it
* Crowdsourcing
* Electronic publishing (including publishing collections
information)
* Location-based services
* Natural user interfaces
* Preservation & conservation technologies
The report (which was assembled by a panel of 44 experts including the
UK's own Mia Ridge) really demonstrates the mainstreaming of emerging
consumer technologies and technology-enabled behaviours in museums.
In some senses it stands in counterpoint to the recent MTM/Arts Council
England report which identified museums as lagging behind the broader
arts community with the adoption of technology. I found myself wondering
at the time whether this was because of the strong focus on bums on
seats and performance/marketing-based uses of technology in the MTM
report, whereas the actual application of digital in museums is much
broader than this. I would welcome peoples' views on this.
Finally, a couple of links to share from Collections Link:
- A new blog post on 'From the top - leading open museums' -
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/blog/2098-openmuseums, and;
- A fantastic interview with former MDA staffer Andrew Roberts
about the early days of museum computing -
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/discover/manage-information/2101-mdahi
story
- The interview with Andrew is part of a really interesting
project on YouTube entitled 'Ideas for Museums: A Biography of Museum
Computing' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH9lTH3YuLo. I don't know
the background, but there are some great interviews with people like Seb
Chan and Jasper Vissers about their personal journey towards working
with computers in museums
All best,
Nick
