Pending budgetary approval, the University of Pittsburgh, Department of
Linguistics, invites applications for two (2) tenure track positions
beginning September 1st, 2014. These appointments will be at the assistant
professor level. Successful applicants should provide clear evidence of
research potential as well as demonstrated teaching excellence.
For both positions, we are looking for applicants who conduct empirical
research in the areas of variationist sociolinguistics and second language
acquisition. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in
the application of corpus-based methodologies, computer analytical tools,
or quantitative methods to the study of language. The requirements for the
PhD must be completed by the position start date, September 1st, 2014.
Position 1.
Applicants for this position must have solid training in linguistic
description and analysis in Variationist Sociolinguistics or Second
Language Acquisition with research and teaching expertise in syntax or
morphology. Demonstrated ability to teach historical linguistics at
graduate and undergraduate levels in addition to teaching and mentoring in
the research specialty is highly desirable. Preference will be given to
candidates with a research program involving less commonly studied
languages.
Position 2.
Applicants for this position must have solid training in Hispanic
linguistics and in Variationist Sociolinguistics or Second Language
Acquisition, with research and teaching expertise in syntax or morphology.
Demonstrated ability to teach historical linguistics at graduate and
undergraduate levels in addition to teaching and mentoring in the research
specialty is highly desirable. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish
and English is required.

a list of funded research if applicable), three letters of reference, a
statement of research and teaching interests, copies/offprints of written
work, and teaching evaluations (if available). Reference letters should be
sent directly to the search committee. Clearly indicate which position you
