Hacking the Smart City, 7 to 9 Nov 2013
As part of the ESRC’s Festival of Social Science, CASA is holding a hackathon co-sponsored by the UK’s Ordnance Survey to develop solutions that will make cities smarter. We are looking for individuals who want to experiment with various types of data and learn more about CASA technologies in order to solve a range of smart city challenges.
The event will run over 3 days:

As the event approaches we will post a list of smart city challenges. We also encourage you to come up with your own ideas. To start things off we have put together some initial ideas in the list below but email us if you have other ideas for challenges.
Examples of Smart City Challenges
1. Visualising the state of London’s transport system: Using real-time data from London transport, can you devise a simple visualisation that indicates transport status at any location in London including disruptions and likely effects?
2. Establishing tipping points for system failure: Using temperature data and information on trains/buses/tubes, can you determine the critical temperature at which transport systems in London begin to fail?
3. Characterising city ‘wellness’: Using data from a range of sources (weather data, air pollution, transport data, social media, crime), can you develop a dynamic wellness indicator for the city of London?
Best wishes,
Linda See, Steven Gray and Richard Milton
