Meeting on Synergy between Solar and Tokamak Plasma Theory

from Philippa Browning [October 14, 2013]

Synergy between Solar and Tokamak Plasma Theory
IOP Plasma Physics Group Meeting & Warwick Physics Day
Wednesday 5th February 2014
University of Warwick Department of Physics

www.warwick.ac.uk/physicsdays/events/solartokamak14

Plasmas in the atmosphere of the Sun and in magnetically-confined fusion devices (tokamaks) exhibit many common physical phenomena such as magnetohydrodynamic waves, instabilities, turbulence and magnetic reconnection. It is often stated that the solar corona and wind are ‘natural plasma laboratories’. The aim of this discussion meeting is to bring together the solar and magnetic-confinement fusion scientific communities in the UK, to identify areas of common interests in magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics theory and simulations, and to initiate collaborations of mutual benefit.

Organisers
Prof Philippa Browning (Manchester, UKSP & IOP Plasma Physics Committees),
Mr Martin O’Brien (CCFE)
Dr Christopher Ham (CCFE, IOP Plasma Physics Committee)
Dr Erwin Verwichte (Warwick, LOC)

We encourage attendance from members of the UK solar or tokamak theory/modelling communities, including PhD students as well as more senior researchers, who are interested in working across the interface between these disciplines. However, the number of participants has to be restricted to allow meaningful discussions. The organisers will allocate places in order to achieve a balance of disciplines, institutions and career stages.

The focus of the workshop will be discussions on synergies between tokamak and solar plasmas and possible areas of collaboration. A limited time is allocated to allow some participants to present short (10 minute) contributed talks outlining research topics of potential interest to both communities. All participants will be able to present a poster.

The registration deadline is Friday 13 December. You can register using a form on the workshop website http://www.warwick.ac.uk/physicsdays/events/solartokamak14
There is no fee, and limited funds may be available to support travel. Accommodation can be arranged for one night before or after for those travelling from long distances. Travel information will be available on the workshop website.

Queries may be directed to Erwin Verwichte ([log in to unmask])

Postdoc position for the forward modelling of solar atmospheric waves (Leuven, Belgium)

from Tom van Doorsselaere [October 10, 2013]

We seek candidates for a post-doctoral position to work in the context of an Odysseus project of the FWO-Vlaanderen (http://www.fwo.be) that aims to perform forward modelling for MHD oscillation models. Forward modelling is the calculation of artificial observations from existing models of the MHD oscillations. The models constructed here are specifically aimed at improving solar atmospheric seismology.
The candidate will be hosted in the Centre for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics (CmPA, http://wis.kuleuven.be/CmPA) in the Mathematics Department of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven, Belgium). The research at the CmPA focusses on plasmas in all astrophysical contexts, ranging from extragalactic jets, over the solar corona, to space weather and the Earth’s magnetosphere.

The tasks in this post-doctoral project are the forward modelling of MHD oscillations, in its broadest sense. This could range from modelling emission features of 3D numerical models, calculating observables from analytical models, to the observational verification of already produced models.

A PhD in Mathematics, Physics or Astrophysics (or closely related subject) is desirable, with preferably a specialisation in solar physics. Experience with numerical modelling and/or forward modelling would be of great benefit. Prior experience with the analysis of oscillatory time series and spectral data is a plus.

You will receive a scholarship for one year, which can be extended after successful evaluation to a total of two years. The position starts March 1, 2014 (or soon thereafter). Applications must include a letter of interest, a CV, a list of publications and the names of two referees. The applications should be sent by e-mail to Tom Van Doorsselaere ([log in to unmask]) before 20/11/2013 and should include [postdoc-odysseus] in the subject line.

Deadline:
2013-11-20

Contact:
Tom Van Doorsselaere ([log in to unmask])

IRIS quicklook slit-jaw movies now available

from Bart De Pontieu [30 Sep 2013]

Slit-jaw movies in Mg II h/k 2796A, Mg II wing 2830A, C II 1330A and Si IV 1400A of recent IRIS observing programs are now available at
http://www.lmsal.com/hek/hcr?cmd=view-recent-events&instrument=iris . They are based on a near real-time data series that contains provisional dark current correction and flat-fielding, but is not fully calibrated (since it is created in near real time before all housekeeping data is processed). The movies will typically show up within 48 hours of the observing time. These preliminary slit-jaw movies are likely to change in the next few weeks as better calibration parameters are obtained.

For observatories who wish to follow IRIS pointings, planned observations for IRIS are available at http://www.lmsal.com/hek/hcr?cmd=view-planned-events&instrument=iris

We expect that calibrated level 2 slit-jaw images and spectra will be available by mid to late October.
More information about IRIS and IRIS data can be found at our new webpage: http://iris.lmsal.com/
Please let us know if you find problems or have questions ([log in to unmask]).

Of particular interest are candidates with research interests in the dynamics and magnetism of the solar atmosphere and interior, and the broader scientific connections between these and Stellar Astrophysics or Space Physics.
Appointment is expected at the Assistant Professor level in the department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, Physics, or Aerospace Engineering Sciences, according to the area of expertise. Applicants should hold a PhD and have research and teaching experience commensurate with the appointment level.
The construction of the ATST and the relocation of the NSO headquarters to the Boulder campus provide a unique opportunity in solar physics. The ATST will achieve unprecedented high-resolution observations of solar photospheric and coronal magnetic fields, and the University of Colorado Boulder and surrounding research institutions will provide a rich teaching and research environment within which to embed NSO activities. Within this context, the candidate will be expected to pursue an innovative program of research and graduate and undergraduate education.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and short descriptions of their research and teaching interests and plans, and request that three letters of reference be submitted on their behalf. Postdoctoral position at Paris Observatory, Meudon, France

from Guillaume Aulanier [20 Sep 2013]

A post-doctoral position is open at Paris Observatory, at the Laboratoire
d'Etudes Spatiales et d'Instrumentation en Astrophysique (LESIA) in Meudon,
close to the city of Paris. The research project focuses on the analytical
and numerical modelling of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The position is
funded by the Domaine d'Interet Majeur "Astrophysique et Conditions d'Apparition
de la Vie" (DIM ACAV) of the Region Ile-de-France (http://dim-acav.org).
The appointment is for 18 months. The net salary should be about 2100 Euros
per month. The position is available immediately. Starting date can be
negotiated up to May 2014.

The applicants should have a PhD in plasma physics or astrophysics. Research
experience in solar magnetohydrodynamics and in numerical simulations would
be a plus. To be eligible, the applicants should also have completed their
PhD in another laboratory than the LESIA, and should not have benefited
from a postdoc position in France before. Applications will be considered
from now on until the position is filled.

The succesful candidate will join the solar group of LESIA. Its research
topics include the formation and the structuring of solar magnetic fields,
the trigerring and development of eruptive phenomena, and the propagation
of heliospheric perturbations. The group has a long tradition of coupling
magnetic field extrapolations, topological analyses, MHD simulations and
multi-wavelength observations, all together. The appointee will be expected
to collaborate with the group, and to develop his/her own research projects
around various possible aspects related to the modelling of CMEs, from
flux emergence to the propagation of ICMEs. In addition to the travel
money from the group, the appointee will benefit from 2000 Euros from
the DIM ACAV.

Any question should be asked to the contact person as indicated hereafter.
The application should include a curriculum vitae, a PhD certificate, a
list of publications, and a list of two potential referees. Please send
your application documents, preferably by email, to the contact person.
