‘The Anti-Social Family’ and ‘The Homosexual Role’ Revisited:
A retrospective on the contribution of Mary McIntosh to the sociology of the family, gender and sexuality.
31st October, 2-5pm at Committee Room 1, Level 4, Institute of Education, Bedford Way, London WC1H OAL.
Professor Carol Smart (The Morgan Centre, University of Manchester) and Emeritus Professor Jeffrey Weeks (London South Bank University) will speak at this special session of the Gender and Sexuality Special Interest Group, which will explore the legacy of Mary McIntosh (1936-2013) for the sociology of the family, gender and sexuality.
Although Mary’s academic interests initially focused on criminology, she is most widely remembered for two seminal contributions to sociological thinking about the family (The Anti-Social Family, 1982 – with Michele Barrett) and sexual identity (The Homosexual Role, 1968). Mary was also one of a generation of academics for whom political activism and academic work were intimately related. She was a founder member of the Gay Liberation Front in the 1960s and subsequently sought to build bridges between the women’s movement, socialist feminism, and lesbian politics. She was also a founder member of Feminist Review. You are warmly invited to listen to, and engage in debate with, two leading sociologists who will discuss Mary’s legacy.
This seminar is open to all students and staff at the IOE and other networks. For further information, or to confirm your attendance, please contact Christine Oliver at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
