Ethics is a core component of qualifying routes for would-be social workers, nurses, medics, youth workers and other professionals across health, social care and beyond. But what is the point of this? What exactly should we be doing, when teaching ethics to professionals? How might the classroom relate to ‘real life’ work situations? How might passing assignments about the role of values, or on challenging ethical dilemmas, relate to competence in practice?
This one-day conference will address these questions from a range of theoretical directions, and with reference to different aspects of professional practice across social work and healthcare, broadly construed. At its heart will be a critical exploration of the role, scope and limitations of ‘professional ethics’, as currently taught.
