Who were the Aero Girls? Discovering Hidden Art in the Archives
Saturday 12 October–Sunday 20 October 2013
Mansion House, York
Open daily 11am–4pm (closed Tuesday 15th October)
Free admission
Meet the Aero Girls at Mansion House and help unravel the mystery of Rowntree's collection of 1950s portraits. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s Aero chocolate bar advertising frequently featured photographic images of women, so why did Rowntree's decide to use paintings of women in print and television from 1951 to 1957? Not much is known about the sitters in the Aero portraits, or who all the artists were. This exhibition documents our journey to find out more. We also invite you to continue our research at the Borthwick Institute for Archives and beyond.
If you were an Aero Girl or if you know of one, the Borthwick Institute would love to hear from you.
This exhibition is supported by Aero® and is part of a series of 'Opening Up Archives' events developed by Kerstin Doble and Francesca Taylor at the Borthwick Institute to share, explore and celebrate the variety of objects and documents held in our archives.
Warm wishes
